| The first
time I saw an opera in the flesh was at the National Opera in
Munich. It was in 1982 or 83 the first or second time that I directed a radio play of mine at the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. I was asked by the team there what I would like to do in the evening and said that I wanted to go to the opera. They had arranged that and I was taken by the editor. She told me many years later at the premier of my first stage opera in Stuttgart that when I was going up the beautiful staircase of theater I had looked up at the paintings on the walls and on the ceilings and had said that I am going to have my operas in a theater like this. She told me later that she thought that I was insane. I remember it somewhat differently. I remember saying that I would have an opera in a theater like this while eating a wild berry and custard dessert and drinking champagne during the interval.
